White rice is associated with causing increased risks of type 2 diabetes and thus it is harmful to diabetic patients. Research has shown that the effect is much more pronounced in countries where a majority of the population eats rice as a staple diet like in Asian countries such as India, China, Japan. In western countries, the risk increased to around 27% but in above mentioned Asian countries to approximately 50%. Also, a lack of physical exercise along with white rice increases the effect of white rice.

Constituents of white rice are 90% carbohydrates, 9% proteins, and 1% fats. Thus it is evident that white rice majorly constitutes of carbohydrates, very less protein and even less fat.

What should we eat then?

Now the question comes to the mind, Ok so what should be the replacement? Firstly brown rice. Now, most of you must have heard which is also a proven fact that milling the brown rice and polishing it removes most of the nutrients from the brown rice (magnesium, Mg for all who know chemistry a bit) which basically helps in reducing diabetes. Whole grain foods must replace the foods like white rice which are low in nutrients. Whole grain bread is better than atta bread. Brown rice better than white rice. Wheat must replace white rice (for eg rotis in India).

So to conclude, reduce your white rice intake in case you are or can potentially be a diabetic patient.
